CS - Many Years On
Posted By Kik: on 01 Mar 2008
» » (0)

Ok, it's CS - many years on time. What's going on in the world of Counter-Strike, has anything changed? Is it still as great as it used to be? Does it still have the community spirit it used to have? Are the CS veterans still out there, getting the odd game of CS in before work? How many people are still sat in their underpants playing CS till the light hours of the morning?! It's not McDonalds causing obesity problems, it's CS - addictiveeee! CS + McDonalds, mmmmmmm.... Hrmmm... well, here's my take on things...

Ok, so it's a fact of life - we all grow up, we all take on new responsibilities (damn), have children of our own, move into jobs which requires more of our time, some of our interests perhaps migrate to more spiritually fulfilling things, gardening for example (It's true i tell ya!)...

From my own personal perspective, the fact is, the CS spirit still lives on today... CS is still one of the most popular games of all times, and still has one of the greatest online experiences for players to enjoy, one which is very unique in its offerings. Recently, I thought, for old times sakes, I might have a quick game to kill some boredom... a few months later, I am still bringing justice to the CS n00bs in the art of the deagle... *puts shades on*

What a strange experience, that is, to jump on a CS server many years down the line - only to hear the 3l4te c093d m3$$@g3s (you've played too much CS when you can read this without too much trouble, no?!) Omg! Where's the console gone! Oh, just need to turn it back on ;P

Have there been any fundamental changes in the Counter-Strike Community? Is it still the same? The fact is, it's still unique in its attraction to players around the world - a different generation now dominates it, perhaps - but the fact remains, like it or not, CS is one of those games we will all remember, and it is a game which is still very unique in its sense of community and team-orientated game play.

Keep your eyes out for the Counter-Server boys, we're still out there, and we're always happy to accomodate the n00bz for target practice *snickers*.

Do you have a knack for writing? Do you love CS as much as we do? Are you hooked in to all the news and information and want to share it with everyone else? Then we want you on our team!

We are currently looking to fill 3 writer positions to post news and updates to anything Counter-Strike related, but Server information will be your core focus. These positions are not paid, and are strictly on a volunteer basis. In order to apply, you must submit an example of your ability to properly write (grammar, punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, spelling, etc). If asked to joined our team, you will be on a minimum 1 month trial to make sure that you are able to keep up with the News and are dedicated to the opportunity.

New Art of War Central Phase 2
Posted By Ronin: on 16 Jan 2007
» (0)

First, let me explain Phase 1. Phase 1 was the purchase of Art of War Central, building new infrastructure, getting rid of the old dead weight, and rebuilding the company to bring out the best. Our company is not where we want it to be yet, but Steve Phallen, our new owner, is pushing us hard and fast.

As you may already know, Steve bought Art of War Central from the old owners only in October. His goal is to revive Art of War Central and to overshadow the rest of the game server companies. Now, this is major task and will take some time, yet Steve has been pushing hard. He’s improved Art of War Central’s customer service, support, billing and sales. The end of phase 1 was to take over another company that had good potential but was not reaching that potential.

And so began Phase 2 with the announcement that Art of War Central buying out VSK Gaming Servers which was based out of St Louis with over 600 game servers and over 150 dedicated servers. While Steve transitions both companies to become a whole, he will be announcing everything here as news posts on Counter-Server first. Now Art of War Central will be upgrading all of the company’s hardware to new twin processor dual core Xeon systems - the best systems available.

We’ve had a great experience with Counter Server; Art of War Central is currently hosting over 550 CS servers. Now we’re announcing a blow out special on St. Louis AMD dedicated servers, exclusively to Counter Server readers for the next few days. We have a variety of hardware available from inexpensive to mid tier and you can get it at bottom dollar prices.

Art of War Central has many more phases to go before we are the company Steve has envisioned for us. But I can ensure you Phase 3 will be right around the corner, and we will be posting updates here first.

For a list of the hardware currently on blow out sale you can follow this link, available exclusively to Counter Server readers until Tuesday: Art of War Central Counter-Server Blow-out Sale

Thank You For Reading

David over at PHPAdmin let us know there's a new version about, and wanted us to let you know:

PHPAdmin version 3.8 Has Been Released! The big news is the massive update for the HL2 Source plugin for both windows and Linux. The Linux plugin has left the beta stages and is included in the download package. The best thing about PHPAdmin this means you will be able to centralize all your bans, gags and etc using one common PHP web interface across all your mixed-types of servers (CS1.6 windows, Linux DOD:Source, and etc) . I think those that have been using PHPAdmin will be very pleased with this release. Here is the change log:

[CHANGE] Minimal Database Activity. This should decrease CPU usage dramatically.
[NEW] Banned IPs, Tags, Filter moved to use Perl Regular Expressions.
[NEW] Move to memory and speed efficient common lib system developed here at Cy6.
[NEW] Communication for the IRCBot uses 256bit encryption.
[NEW] Multiple steamids per user account. Fixes issue with people having split accounts CS and CS:S.
[NEW] Ircbot can double as a "channel/clan" bot. Triggers used are based on Perl Regular Expressions.
[NEW] Ircbot recognizes multiple steamids per irc auth.
[CHANGE] Reduced CPU usage for the IRCBot and IRCBot related components in the PHPAdmin plugin.
[NEW] Gag (on text chat, mic chat) works in Source servers.
[NEW] Filtering "bad" words in Source servers.
[FIX] Csay and Tsay fixed for Source servers.
[FIX] Hud/chat messages fixed for Source servers.
[FIX] Voting system for Source servers fixed.
[FIX] Fixes to PHPAdmin file execution error sometimes causing a loop.
[NEW] Teambalancer for HL1 (CS Only)
[FIX] afkcheck for CS:S fixed
[NEW] pa_xis changes a player into a drunk with cool effect.
[NEW] being able to stay in spectator without getting kicked when afkcheck is enabled.
[FIX] pa_switch will work no matter what the current state of players is and pa_switch works without killing the player

ZombieMod for CS:S (Beta Testers Required)
Posted By Sivel: on 26 Mar 2006
» (0)

First, what is ZombieMod ?
ZombieMod is a recreation of the Zombie portion of Nemod, a plugin released a while back by Fysh.
For those of you who don't know of it, i'll explain.

When enabled on default settings, the level is loaded 'Dark', all players spawn normally and you cannot damage anybody.
Rifles and the MG are restricted.

After a random amount of time (2-10 seconds), one player is changed into a Zombie complete with model, unable to use any weapon other than the knife, and is given 5,000 health. They can also run alot faster than humans, are provided with night vision and have a wider 'Field Of Vision'.

Zombies change humans to zombies by slashing them once with their knife, new Zombies are then given 2,500 health and also reduced to using their knife only.

When humans attack zombies, they have a knockback effect similar to hollywood movies. When you get a headshot the effect is really displayed.

Zombies can only use voice with other zombies, same for humans.

The round ends when either all zombies are killed, or all Humans have been turned to zombies.

Features:

  • Customisable Zombie models.

  • Zombie sounds for hurt, death and random noises.

  • zombie_health cvar, first zombie is 2x this.

  • zombie_speed cvar for zombie speed.

  • zombie_fov cvar for zombie Field Of View.

  • zombie_knockback cvar for knockback.

  • zombie_restrictions cvar to restrict weapons.

  • zombie_dark cvar to allow for normal lighting during maps.

  • zombie_bonus cvar to add frags for zombifying humans.

  • zombie_teams cvar to use CT for Humans and T for zombies (Experimental).

  • zombie_respawn cvar to respawn zombies killed by humans as a human.

  • zombie_max_ammo cvar for unlimited ammunition.

  • zombie_suicide cvar to remove players ability to 'suicide'.

We have been testing the ZombieMod on a linux 32 slot server with no problems for about two months now. We have just now completed the windows version and we are currently preparing for a public release. We need windows and linux server admins who have to meet the criteria below...

Windows Servers

  • You must have access to the root HLDS folder, which contains .mdmp files created during a crash and be allowed to edit server startup command line.

  • Linux
  • Must be have SSH access, FTP access to the HLDS folder, and the ability to run gdb.

If you think you can be a tester, please email c0ldfyr3 at c0ld(.at.)c0ld.net

Source and Half-Life 1 Dedicated server update released
Posted By Kik: on 10 Mar 2006
» » (0)

Updates to the Source and Half-Life 1 dedicated server have been
released. Run the hldsupdatetool to get this update.

This update makes public the "swapbeta" that has been running for a
while. This update is optional but HIGHLY recommended as it fixes the
steamid swapping bug seen on servers. This update also smoothes out some
spiky CPU usage seen on servers and fixes several crashes on Linux
distributions using older GLIBC versions.
