View Full Version : Jumping Jumping Jumping Ports...

Setup:
1) DSL
2) Windows Internet Connection Sharing (allows more than 1 computer to use same IP)
3) 2 Computers (one server, one client) and hub
4) Dsl enters server's NIC(1), exits server's NIC(2), goes to hub, enters client NIC
(NIC=Network Interface Card)
Problem:
I use the the client computer on my LAN to run HLDS and I use the server computer on my LAN to play CS. But when I run HLDS it runs on port 192.168.0.2:27015 in my LAN, which is not a problem... BUT!!! Other people see my IP as 63.248.151.203:1066 My problem is NOT that I can't figure out my IP... but I can't hold constant the port numbers for the IP that everyone sees... sometimes it's port :1066 sometimes :1044 sometimes :1119 sometimes :1069 and it just keeps switching every time I turn on HLDS or whenever i restart the server computer... randomly choosing a new port number each time I start HLDS... it's really frustrating becasue i have a static IP from GTE and I can't tell my friends what my IP is, because my port numbers change everyday!
HELP!
Charles

I have almost the exact setup, however I have not tried to run an internet HLDS. My only guess is your ICS is not setup properly. I will try it tommorow, and see what happens. although what I would tell you to do is run it as an internet game. Then see what it is then, if you get a continous port then simply connect over the lan with the sv_lan command.

Hey thanks for replying...
Well the thing is that the game sets up okay and I can play in it and so can everyone else that I give the correct IP to... but the next time I restart server computer, a new port number appears... and I have to find the port number again...
the port number is NEVER 27015... it's only 27015 for the LAN game IP 192.168.0.2:27015 but for the outside people it appears 63.248.151.203:1066 or some number under 2000 don't know why...
Thanks for helping me out,
Charles
PS I always setup an Internet game... never a LAN game... because with an Internet game you can see it on the LAN and online.

seems quite strange !!
are you sure that is not your ISP that
gives you random ports ?
are you sure that all the needed ports
are forwarded ?
maybe you will want to check this : http://www.g4h.net/hlds_faq/
well, good luck !

going forward may not be the answer,

If you tell them to connect through the consol and just type the ip and not the port it should automatically detect the port mine always has.

Type through the console? As in you're already in a game then you press "~" to bring up the console and add the IP or you mean when you click "add server" from the menu list before you're in a game, and then type the IP address in the little box?

You could do it that way with connecting to a server first then hitting the tilda but why when you can enter the consol with the top consol option on the main menu. "You might say consol option what the hell you talkin about" If you don't enter cs through the link that is placed on your desktop you will not see the consol option. it doesn't appear after activating cs in hl. Due to one simple line in the short cut "-console"

Hehehe, my my my I'm confused... and I read your post like 5 times... I'm sorry I'm a little dull/slow/moronic but could you explain that again slowly and more intricately? http://server.counter-strike.net/ubb/smile.gif thanks...

Ok tilda =~ the counterstirke icon that is on your desktop "unless you choose not to install it" will bring you up with a consol option "that will bring you directly into the consol without joining a game first". If you activate counterstrike in Half-Life itself this option will not appear.

Charles, you are not doing anything wrong. This is a known issue with ICS. I know how to hack the registry to force specific IP's for clients (i.e. other than 192.168.0.x), but I don't know how to tell it how to specifically route ports (or to leave them alone). Try searching some Win98 tech sites.
Also you might want to try a more robust ICS-type program like SyGate or WinGate or WinProxy. I don't know if they do the same thing with ports or not, but hopefully I've given you some direction to head in.

I see... thanks for the direction, I will attempt to look into Sygate as I have heard most people use it to do NAT (what does that stand for again???). I'm just really irritated about having different ports each time I start the server you know?
On the otherhand I might go the route of searching Win98 tech sites or upgrading to Win2k... I hear it runs HLDS much better... :P

NAT = netword address translation
when a client asks for something on the "internet" it sends the request to the server, the server asks for it by translating the clients ip to it's ip which is recognized on the internet then when it gets the info back it translates the other way and forwards the info to the client.

Ekin, don't piss me off! http://server.counter-strike.net/ubb/tongue.gif
the random port issue is seen in ICS if you are using win98 (se) to share connection. Or WinME. if you use win2k server, it will be able to forward the ports correctly. If you have any idea how to set up a route table, you can bypass ICS altogether and then JUST set up the server ports you need. From what i understand this issue is also seen in D-Link routers. really no way around it unless you can set up your route tables correctly

Mh, Charles,
read on here (valid for W2K only)

If you're on Win98 or WinMe, which i strongly suggest, then do a search either on MS Knowledgebase for ICS on Win9x, or search for it in the forum here, where i posted an answer together with the reg-tweaking once. It's ~30 days ago anywhere (except adminmod) here.
Further questions to this are rejected by me as the solution is here - use it.
