My setup:

Machine 1: Dually machine, 2 NICS, Win2000
NIC 1: To ISP (Cable)
NIC 2: X-Over cable to WinMe p3 machine
(Machine 2)

Internet connection is shared using MS Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)

Both machines can use the 'net without any limitations...

I installed CS on the dual machine hoping to set up a dedicated server, and play on it from my second machine
Problem:

I can only see the server if I start a LAN game..

Does anyone have experience with ICS? I have fiddled with the port setting in ICS to no avail... the 1st NIC is DHCP client, gets IP from ISP, second NIC has static IP and also assigns IP to client machine..

Please help!!

I have the same setup more or less... (how did you get ME? It's not even out yet... and are you running 2000 prof ed. on your server?) anyway when you create a game on your dedicated server and play on the other machine you will only see the LAN IP, however when other people join (FROM OUTSIDE YOUR LAN) they will see it as an internet game with a public IP address... I'm assuming if you're using the Prof Ed. machine to run HLDS then depending on if you have static or dynamic IP you should be xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:27015

go to RUN and type in WINIPCFG and find your adapter (the one that's connected to the NET) and then find that IP number... then add port 27015 and that should be your public IP... if it isn't then write back here on the forum

REMEMBER YOU'RE ON THE LAN OF COURSE YOU'RE ONLY GONNA SEE YOUR LAN IP!!!

My work has an MSDN subscription, the final version was posted last week on the MSDN site, and was shipped with the August CD pack...

So if I understand right, I will connect as a LAN game, but my Internet buddies will connect fine and I can play with them.. that's all I wanted to do!

Yeah I have an IP from the ISP that is dynamic, but hasn't changed in 3 months! They started scanning MAC addresses to, so I had to swap my NIC cards around as well... as long as they have that IP we are good to start fragging! The server is a dual 400 celerons, with 256 megs and Win2k Pro.. it should host 6 or so players ok I think...

Thanks for the help !!

Okay.. i had the same problem with i as running sharing on my host computer and trying to run a server off it. One thing i can say.. DONT SURE ICS !!! It doesn't let u run a server for some reason... after i installed win2k server and used IP Routing though NAT and works fine http://server.counter-strike.net/ubb/smile.gif

I hosted a game on my machine and then enabled ics while ppl were in there and instantly i could see that my upload was killed.

CORRECTION !!!! as you can see I've been at this all night.. but folks I've got a fix so that you CAN host a Lan game on an ICS proxy computer. The problem is that ics by default closes one of the ports HL uses to communicate with the outside world 27015 and 27005 UDP. Now the problem is editing the regsistry to reflect these changes blows monekey a$$ (whatever that means) neway .. I stumbled across this great lil utility for opening ports in ICS and it also maps ports, although I havent gotten the latter figured completly out just yet. ( im a mappin but i still cant get my HLDS server puter to let ppl come in via the net throught my proxy puter)

Here's the link to the must have program of the century for ICS users.. they even have plugins for dummies that dont know how to map or open ports.. download the plugin, import it and click to enable the new settings and it'll automatically update the registry after a reboot of course.

good luck http://server.counter-strike.net/ubb/smile.gif

so my ISP's DHCP server went down, but I didn't know about it until I fiddled with all my ICS settings...

So guess what? I can see the server in LAN games, but I cannot connect!!! I am pissed!

I opened up ports 27005-27015, set remote server as 27010..all in the ICS...

HELP!!

Fixed it - u need an autoexec.cfg file in your cdstrike directory

mine is...

maxplayers 10
ip 213.123.146.xxx
port 27015
noipx
map cs_italy
heapsize 96000

and just make sure your shortcut to start hlds has -game cstrike

that's it. Get your ip addy by doing ipconfig is a dos box and place that in your autoexec.cfg file.

If u r DHCP served by your ISP like I am, then u will need to check and possibly change the ip addy in your autoexec.cfg every time u logon to the net, but this depends how long u r granted your ip addy by your ISP.

Hope this helps.

@Doundrellos
You grabbed an Realy realy old post, but anyway:
on hlds shortcut, you can add -noipx
This tells HL not to search for IPX packets and not to start the server on this protocol.
It's usefull, if you have older games and therefor ipx is setup on your local lan.
