SteamBans.com

You may or may not have heard of steambans before, but I thought that I would introduce you all to this great service. SteamBans.com is an independent anti-cheat service working with united-admins to crack down on cheaters, but it's a service with a difference, it has nothing to do with the client, no modules to download, no software, and doesn’t need anything on the server. All that is required is rcon.

What happens is, SteamBans.com sends an rcon 'users' at regular intervals and checks everyone’s steam id against their database of banned users, if a user is found to be cheating, they are kicked and banned from the server.

As for their bans database, members of steambans, if they believe someone is hacking, can take a demo and submit it for checking. It is then checked over by a number of the SteamBans team, if they are indecisive of a demo, they have a crew of "demo-consultants" consisting of pro/semi-pro players, who will check demo's and give their opinions, should they decide that it is a cheater, they will be added to the database. Ofcourse, people are told they are banned by steambans.com, and are given a chance to defend themselves, like an appeal.

Steambans are also working on 8 projects, to help server admins, both technically and educational, such as a Fingerprint HD Scanner which can detect the cheats on a clients computer, and also a metamod plugin for those who wish to use that.

So, for anyone looking for a little more protection against cheaters, without the problems of other 3rd-party anti-cheats. Take a look at SteamBans.com

Interview with Gabe Newell

The transcript from an "outstanding" interview with Gabe Newell on Half-Life Radio was released. Check it out here.

"Gabe Newell: Right now the game is basically complete end to end... and we are bringing in play tester after play tester. We watch them play, we see what sort of style play they use whether their more exploration vs. action and then we make sure the game works for them. So we just keep doing that over and over again. Each time we do a playtest we generate about 100 change items for the game, and then we go back ... until we feel the game is ready to go."

PS2.1 Progress Update

A quick post regarding Psychostats v2.1 from stormtrooper.

"I figure it's about time I post an update regarding the progress of the PsychoStats v2.1 release. Anyone can always check the current changelog to the left for up-to-date information as to what has been fixed or implemented in the new version: http://www.psychostats.com/pstatslog.php

One major feature that was finally fully implemented as of today was full AWARDS SUPPORT. PS2.1 will calculate and store weekly and monthly awards automatically. Awards are defined in an awards.cfg and are very flexable (each MOD can have it's own awards.cfg too for mod-specific awards).

Another major feature in PS2.1 is the inclusion of an Admin Control Panel (ACP) that is built into the themes to allow users to login to the stats page to customize their players and clans. A new AMXMOD plugin was created to help with the authentication process to make sure players/users are verified before being able to login to the stats page.

There is still no release date for PS2.1. So please be patient. I have to finish several small fixes/tweaks before this release will be ready for release.

Thanks

Stormtrooper"

COSTA CS Teamplay Awards
Posted By statix :May 14, 2004, 14:11

One of the main things that have driven me away from using stats on my server is the abolishment of teamplay, stats tend to make players just go on a frag hunt, which is why I was so impressed when I found this neat add-on for Psycostats.

COSTA Counter-Strike Teamplay awards aims to erradicate these problems by implementing military ranks, and medals for completing mission goals such as planting the bomb and rescuing hostages e.t.c., this works both ways, for example you will go down for killing hostages. This stats system also looks at weapon proficiency, to be successfull in the stats you will need to have had atleast one kill with each of the 24 weapons, this is supposed to encourage some of the better players to use weaker weapons, to advance in their ranking.
