Quote from Alfred:
We have released an update for Counter-Strike: Source. This is a mandatory update, you will need to run hldsupdatetool to get the update.
This update improves the behaviour of grenades in the game and adds the "+ip" parameter to the dedicated server command line. More details on the update can be found at:

A quick update from Alfred on the HLDS mailing list.
We have released an update to Counter-Strike and Counter-Strike Condition Zero. You can get the update by running the hldsupdatetool ("hldsupdatetool.exe" under win32 and "steam" under linux).
This update addresses the spec_pip exploit and fixes a player lag compensation bug found by the NS team. Details can be read at:

New GameSurge Service

As many of you know, we at Counter-Server call GameSurge our home IRC network. If you didn't already know that, get an IRC client (ie: mIRC), and join us in #counter-server on irc.gamesurge.net.
Today, the GameSurge Board of Directors has announced a new service offered to the users of GameSurge to replace that default - and dare I say monotonous? - "ACCOUNT.user.gamesurge" host that comes with the +x usermode. Not only will it hide your IP address from malicious users, it will also let you spice up your host with a custom title or entirely fake host of your choosing. And it's offered to you at only a fraction of what you'd pay for a commercial vhost (best of all, there are no pesky configuration files, shells, or proxies you have to connect through; the custom host will follow you everywhere you go, via your AuthServ account).
So even if you aren't worried about the default hidden hostmask, show the GameSurge Staff that you appreciate the work and dedication they put into the network by ordering your custom fakehost today!
You can find more information on this new service here. Read the full article for a closer look at why this is so important.

Alfred over at VALVe has let us know that the Win32 and Linux server clients are available in beta format to download and test. Grab the update tool and follow the directions, and make sure you provide any sort of feedback, both good and bad, as it is vital to the beta testing of the dedicated client.

AMX Mod have just released v0.9.9 of their popular server mod. It seems the project is alive again, and going full steam ahead! It also seems they plan to release it open source very soon.
AMX Mod is still in no way associated with AMXx, and it is said that both plugins will go different ways in the future.

After just discovering this thread on Steampowered.com, it seems that a HLDS for Counter-Strike:Source (named "HLDS:S") will be made available at the same time as the CS:S Beta is released, and it will be available on both win32 and Linux platforms.
SSClient

SSClient is an anti-cheat tool for various games (including CS ofcourse) others include BF1942/Vietnam, MoH, CoD and ET.
Basically, SSClient runs a client and a server, it takes a screenshot on the client, and uploads it to the server after compressing it into a jpeg form. To transfer the screenshot to the server it uses a "trickle" method, similar to the way HLDS servers transfer maps to the client, very slowly to avoid lag.
It also boasts other features such as the ability to upload to a ftp server once the SSClient server has the screenshot, and enter user data into a MySQL database, which creates endless possiblities of web based cataloguing of both screenshots and players (and both tied together).

ESL Pauses Counter-Strike Ladders

Today, ESL have announced that they have put their Counter-Strike ladder on pause, due to quite a serious bug in Counter-Strike.
ESL reports:
"The bug makes it possible to be able to fade in from Spectator, the general map including the positions of the opponents. This is also if Spectators are not permitted in the config. Further, as of now, the use of this bug cannot be proven which makes a fair operational ladder impossible."
There doesn't seem to be any news of any other league/ladder operators taking any action at this time.
Lets hope Valve fix this problem before more people start learning how to take advantage of this bug.
CS Source beta release date announced

CS Nation reports a CS Source beta test date, for CS:Condition-Zero Owners, has been released.
It is said that it will start pre-loading on the 5th of August, and be playable on the 10th. Apparently the CS:S Beta will be 300mb, which makes you wonder how much they have (or haven't) included in this beta test version.
This begs the question of if/when there will be a dedicated server released for this beta version.
